Nachtlied
(Sung text for setting by B. Klein)
 See original
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  CAT DAN DUT ENG ENG FRE
Vergangen ist der lichte Tag;

O Menschenkind, was schauert dich?

Night song
(Sung text translation for setting by B. Klein)
 See original
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Gone is the bright day;
From afar comes the tolling of the bell.
Thus travels the time the whole night,
Carries many along who never knew.

Where is now the colourful joy gone,
The friend’s comfort and faithful bosom,
The woman’s sweet, sparkling glances?
Will no one stay awake with me?

Since the world is now so quiet,
The clouds gather lonely over the field,
And field and tree converse, -
Oh, child of man, why are you shivering?

However wide the false world may be,
One stays still faithful to me,
One, who weeps with me, who wakes with me,
When I just would think of him.

Then start afresh, dear nightingale,
You waterfall of bright sound!
Together we will praise the Lord,
Until the morning light appears!
