Was that ich dir, Ulysses?
Daß du sie mir entwandt

Die Waffe, die den Trojern
Des Todes Bothe war;
Die auf der wüsten Insel
Mir Unterhalt gebar.

Es rauschen Vögelschwärme
Mir über'm greisen Haupt;
Ich greife nach dem Bogen -
Umsonst - er ist geraubt.

Aus dichtem Busche raschelt
Der braune Hirsch hervor:
Ich strecke leere Arme
Zur Nemesis empor.

Du schlauer König scheue
Der Göttin Rächerblick!
Erbarme dich - und stelle
Den Bogen mir zurück.

Daar zit ik zonder boog 
nu en staar maar in het zand.
Wat deed ik jou, Ulysses, 
dat jij me maakt' onthand?

Het wapen dat Trojanen 
bezorgd' een wisse dood,
Dat op het woeste eiland 
mij overleving bood.
 
Er ruisen vogelzwermen rond 
om mijn grijze hoofd;
Ik wil mijn boog vlug grijpen: 
vergeefs, hij is geroofd!

Het bruine hert breekt rits'lend 
uit struiken dicht en droog:
Ik strek mijn lege armen 
naar Nemesis omhoog.
 
Jij, sluwe koning, vrees toch 
het godd'lijk wrekend oog!
Erbarm je toch en geef mij 
terug mijn eigen boog.
