Wie hab' ich dich so gern --
Der Himmel ist wolkenverhangen,
Nur hier und da ein Stern.

Wie leiser Liebesodem
Hauchet  ...  die Luft,
Es steigt aus allen Thalen
Ein warmer Veilchenduft.

Ich möcht' ein Lied ersinnen,
Das diesem Abend gleicht;
Und kann den Klang nicht finden
So dunkel, mild und weich.

How much I love you!
The sky is draped with clouds,
Only here and there a star.

Like a soft breath of love,
The breeze whispers,
From all the valleys rises
A warm scent of violets.

I would like to create a song
That is like this evening,
And I cannot find the sound,
So dark, gentle, and soft.
