Mich hat der Herbst betrogen,
Dir, Mutter, sei's geklagt:
Die Schwalb' ist fortgezogen,
Und hat mir's nicht gesagt.
Und hat mit weggenommen
Das Licht, den Sonnenschein,
Und wenn sie wiederkommen,
Werd' ich gestorben sein.
Note: Some later editions have the title "Winterahnung."
Composition:
Set to music by Max Reger (1873 - 1916), "Winterahnung", op. 4 no. 3 (1891)

Autumn has deceived me,
To you, Mother, I lament it:
The swallow has flown away,
And did not tell me of it.
And has taken away with it
The light, the sunshine,
And when they return
I shall have died.
