Einkehr

Language: German (Deutsch)

Bei einem Wirte, wundermild,
Da war ich einst zu Gast,
Ein gold'ner Apfel war sein Schild
An einem langen Aste.

Es war der gute Apfelbaum,
Bei dem ich eingekehret,
Mit süsser Kost und frischem Schaum
Hat er mich wohl genähret.

Es kamen in sein grünes Haus
Viel leichtbeschwingte Gäste;
Sie sprangen frei und hielten Schmaus
Und sangen auf das Beste.

Ich fand ein Bett zu süsser Ruh
Auf weichen grünen Matten;
Der Wirt, er deckte selbst mich zu
Mit seinem kühlen Schatten.

Nun fragt' ich nach der Schuldigkeit,
Da schüttelt' er den Wipfel.
Gesegnet sei er allezeit
Von der Wurzel bis zum Gipfel.

Note for R. Strauss's 1871 setting: his father corrected three words in the manuscript as follows:
Stanza 1, line 4: "langen" became "grünen"
Stanza 2, line 3: "süsser" became "frischer"
Stanza 4, line 4: "kühlen" became "grünen"

Chez un hôte délicieux
Je m'étais récemment invité,
Son enseigne était une pomme d'or
Au bout d'une longue branche.

C'était un bon pommier
Chez qui je m'étais arrêté,
De doux manger et frais jus
Il m'a bien nourri.

Dans sa verte maison venaient
De nombreux hôtes à l'aile légère ;
Ils batifolaient, se régalaient
Et chantaient au mieux.

Je trouvai un lit pour un doux repos
Sur un vert et moelleux tapis ;
L'hôte lui‑même me couvrait
De son ombre fraîche.

Quand je demandai combien je devais
Il secoua la cime.
Qu'il soit béni à jamais,
Des racines au sommet.
