Aus alten Märchen winkt es
Hervor mit weißer Hand,
Da singt es und da klingt es
Von einem Zauberland;

Wo bunte Blumen blühen
Im gold'nen Abendlicht,
Und lieblich duftend glühen,
Mit bräutlichem Gesicht;

Und grüne Bäume singen
Uralte Melodei'n,
Die Lüfte heimlich klingen,
Und Vögel schmettern drein;

Und Nebelbilder steigen
Wohl aus der Erd' hervor,
Und tanzen lust'gen Reigen
Im wunderlichen Chor; 

Und blaue Funken brennen
Auf jedem Blatt und Reis,
Und rote Lichter brennen
Im irren, wirren Kreis;

Und laute Quellen brechen
Aus wildem Marmorstein.
Und seltsam in den Bächen
Strahlt fort der Widerschein. 

Ach, könnt' ich dorthin kommen,
Und dort mein Herz erfreu'n,
Und aller Qual entnommen,
Und frei und selig sein!

Από τα βάθη των παλιών θρύλων
ένα λευκό χέρι κάνει σινιάλο,
όλα τραγουδούν εκεί, όλα αντηχούν
σ’ αυτή την υπέροχη γη:

Όπου λαμπυρίζουν πολύχρωμα λουλούδια
στο χρυσαφένιο φως του δειλινού
και απλώνουν τα ευγενικά τους αρώματα
με μια όψη νυμφική:

Τα δέντρα καταπράσινα τραγουδούν
αιώνιες μελωδίες,
ο αέρας είναι γεμάτος από μυστικούς τόνους
στους οποίους αναμειγνύονται τα τιτιβίσματα των πουλιών·

Εικόνες ομίχλης
υψώνονται από την γη
και χορεύουν ατμώδεις κυκλικούς χορούς
μέσα σε μια παράξενη χορωδία·

Γαλάζιες σπίθες λάμπουν
σε κάθε φύλλο, σε κάθε κλαδί,
και κόκκινα αμυδρά φώτα
στριφογυρίζουν τρελά·

Θορυβώδεις πηγές
αναβλύζουν από το άγριο μάρμαρο.
Και στα ρυάκια ακτινοβολεί
η παράξενη αντανάκλαση.

Αχ! αν μπορούσα να βρεθώ εκεί-κάτω,
να δώσω χαρά στην καρδιά μου
και αποτραβηγμένος από τα βάσανά μου
να γίνω τελικά ελεύθερος κι ευτυχισμένος!
