Ich hab ein Bächlein funden
Vom Städtchen ziemlich weit,
Da bin ich manche Stunden
In stiller Einsamkeit.
Ich thät mir gleich erkiesen
Ein Plätzchen kühles Moos;
Da sitz' ich, und da fließen
Mir Thränen in den Schooß.

Für dich, für dich nur wallet
Mein jugendliches Blut;
Doch, leise nur erschallet
Dein Nam' an dieser Flut.
Ich fürchte, daß mich täusche
Ein Lauscher aus der Stadt;
Es schreckt mich das Geräusche
Von jedem Pappelblatt.

 ...

Von meinem Blumenhügel
Sah ich dir lange nach;
Ich wünschte mir die Flügel
Der Täubchen auf dem Dach;
Nun glaub' ich zu vergehen
Mit jedem Augenblick.
Willst du dein Liebchen sehen,
So komme bald zurück!

Daphné au bord du ruisseau
 (Sung text translation for setting by J. Kraus)
 See original
Language: French (Français)  after the German (Deutsch)
J'ai trouvé un petit ruisseau
Assez loin de la ville,
Là j'ai passé de nombreuses heures
Dans la  solitude sans bouger.
Je choisis pour moi le même
Endroit dans la mousse fraîche ;
Là je m'assois et là coulent
Mes larmes dans mon sommeil.

Pour toi, pour toi seul, bout
Mon jeune sang ;
Pourtant tout doucement j'ai prononcé
Ton nom à cette eau.
J'ai peur d'être trahie
Par un espion de la ville ;
Je suis effrayée par le bruit
De chaque feuille de peuplier.

 ...

De ma colline fleurie
Je regardais vers toi longtemps ;
Je souhaitais avoir des ailes
Comme la petite colombe sur le toit ;
Maintenant je pense mourir
À tout moment.
Si tu souhaites revoir ta bien-aimée,
Reviens bientôt !
