  Mir träumte: traurig schaute der Mond,
Und traurig schienen die Sterne;
Es trug mich zur Stadt, wo Liebchen wohnt,
Viel hundert Meilen ferne.

  Es hat mich zu ihrem Hause geführt,
Ich küßte die Steine der Treppe,
Die oft ihr kleiner Fuß berührt
Und ihres Kleides Schleppe.

  Die Nacht war so lang, die Nacht schaut' kalt,
Es waren so kalt die Steine;
Es lugt' aus dem Fenster die blasse Gestalt,
Beleuchtet vom Mondenscheine!

J'étais en rêve: la lune avait un regard triste,
Et tristes semblaient les étoiles;
Il me porta à la ville où ma bien-aimée vit,
Éloignée de plusieurs centaines de milles.

Il m'a conduit à sa maison,
J'ai embrassé les pierres de son escalier,
Souvent touchées de son petit pied
Et de la traîne de son vêtement.

La nuit était longue, la nuit était froide,
Les pierres aussi étaient froides.
On voyait par la fenêtre sa silhouette pâle
Illuminée par le clair de lune!
