Ich möchte ziehn in die Welt hinaus,
Hinaus in die weite Welt,
Wenn's nur so grün, nicht wär', so grün
Da draußen in Wald und Feld!

Ich möchte die grünen Blätter all'
Pflücken von jedem Zweig,
Ich möchte die grünen Gräser all'
Weinen so bleich, so bleich.

Ich möchte liegen vor ihrer Thür,
In Sturm und Regen und Schnee,
Und singen leise bei Tag und Nacht
Das eine Wörtchen Ade!

Horch, wenn im Wald ein Jagdhorn ruft,
Da klingt ihr Fensterlein,
Und schaut sie auch nach mir nicht aus,
Darf ich doch schauen hinein.

O binde von der Stirn dir ab
Das grüne, grüne Band,

Θα ήθελα να βγω έξω στον κόσμο,
Έξω στον απέραντο κόσμο·
Μακάρι μόνο να μην ήταν τόσο πράσινα, τόσο πράσινα
Όλα εκεί πέρα στα δάση και τους αγρούς!

Θα ήθελα όλα τα πράσινα φύλλα
Να κόψω από κάθε κλαδί,
Θα ήθελα όλα τα πράσινα χορτάρια
Να θρηνήσω ώσπου να γίνουν χλωμά σα νεκρά.

Θα ήθελα να πέσω μπροστά στην πόρτα της
Σε θύελλα και βροχή και χιόνι.
Και να σιγοτραγουδώ μέρα και νύχτα
Αυτή τη λεξούλα μοναχά: Αντίο!

Άκου, όταν στο δάσος αντηχεί ένα κυνηγετικό κόρνο,
Τότε ακούγεται το παραθυράκι της!
Κι αν ακόμη εκείνη δεν κοιτάζει προς εμένα,
Εγώ όμως μπορώ να κοιτάξω μέσα.

Ω, λύσε από το μέτωπό σου
Την πράσινη, την πράσινη κορδέλα·
