Neujahrslied
(Sung text for setting by F. Mendelssohn)

Language: German (Deutsch)

Mit der Freude zieht der Schmerz
Traulich durch die Zeiten,
Schwere Stürme, milde Weste,
Bange Sorgen, frohe Feste
Wandeln sich zur Seiten.

   Und wo manche Thräne fällt,
Blüht auch manche Rose,
Schon gemischt, noch eh' wir's bitten,
Ist für Thronen und für Hütten
Schmerz und Lust im Loose.

War's nicht so im alten Jahr?
Wird's im neuen enden?
Sonnen wallen auf und nieder,
Wolken geh'n und kommen wieder,
Und kein Wunsch wird's wenden.

   Gebe denn, der über uns
Wägt mit rechter Waage,
Jedem Sinn für seine Freuden,
Jedem Mut für seine Leiden,
In die neuen Tage.

Nieuwjaarslied
(Sung text translation for setting by F. Mendelssohn)
 See original
Language: Dutch (Nederlands)  after the German (Deutsch)
Met de vreugde trekt verdriet
Handvast door de tijden,
Zware stormen, milde vlagen,
Vrees en zorgen, blije dagen
Gaan elkaar terzijde.

En waar menig traantje valt,
Bloeien toch ook rozen;
Reeds gemengd, al voor we 't weten,
Is voor tronen en voor keten
Lief en leed gekozen.

Was 't niet zo in 't oude jaar?
Zal 't in 't nieuwe keren?
Zonnen komen op en dalen,
Wolken gaan vaak regen halen,
En geen wens kan 't weren.

Geef Gij dus, die volgens recht
Oordeelt ons gedragen,
Allen zin voor hun verblijden,
Ieder moed ook voor zijn lijden
In de nieuwe dagen.
