Til Død, hvad der var ilive.
Sorg skal følge paa Lyst,
Stille, Du bankende Bryst!
Kun de evige Love skal blive.
Venner, ræk Haand over Graven hen;
Den Døde kommer ej mer igen,
Men Aanden taler fra Rummet,
Naar Læben her er forstummet.

was lebt, muß zum Grabe gehen.
Sorg' muß folgen auf Lust,
Schweige, du klopfende Brust! 
Nur das ew'ge Gesetz bleibt bestehen.
Freund, reich die Hand übers Grab mir her;
Die Tote kommt ja zurück nicht mehr,
ihr Geist vom Raume sich zeiget,
wenn die Lippe hier nun auch schweiget.
