Könnt' ich einmal wieder singen,
Wär' ich wiederum gesund,
Aber noch will's Herz zerspringen,
Und im Trauern schweigt der Mund.

Kaum, daß die so leise Klage
Aus dem vollen Busen drang,
Wie an einem Wintertage
Oft schon halb ein Vogel sang.

Wie aus Wolken eng verschlossen
Halb oft dringt ein Sonnenblick,
Bald von Regen übergossen,
Wiederkehrt in sich zurück,

Also hellte mein Gemüte
Ach nur kurz ein lichter Traum,
Und vom aufgeweckten Liede
Hallten diese Töne kaum.

Kon ik eenmaal maar weer zingen,
Dan was  'k wederom gezond,
Maar nog wil mijn hart stukspringen
En in treurnis zwijgt mijn mond.

Niet veel meer dan heel zacht klagen
Aan mijn volle hart ontsprong ,
Als wanneer op winterdagen
Vaak al half een vogel zong.

Zoals vaak uit dichte wolken
Half slechts dringt een straaltje zon
En versmoord door regenkolken,
Snel weer terugkeert naar zijn bron,

Zo kwam mijn gemoed verlichten,
Ach, slechts kort een lichte droom,
En van 't lied, het juist gestichte,
Klonk maar nauwelijks een toon.
