Soldat sein ist gefährlich,
studieren sehr beschwerlich,
das Dichten süß und zierlich,
der Dichter gar possierlich
in diesen wilden Zeiten.
Ich möcht' am liebsten reiten,
ein gutes Schwert zur Seiten,
die Laute in der Rechten,
Studentenherz zum Fechten.
Ein wildes Roß ist's Leben,
die Hufe Funken geben,
wer's ehrlich wagt, bezwingt es,
und wo es tritt, da klingt es!

Ser soldat és perillós,
estudiar és fatigós,
la poesia és dolça i delicada
però els poetes massa grotescs,
en aquests temps salvatges.
M'agradaria més cavalcar
amb una bona espasa al costat,
un llaüt a la mà dreta
i un cor d'estudiant per al combat.
La vida és un cavall salvatge,
les seves ferradures treuen espurnes,
qui s'arrisca honestament, la domina
i allà on vagi, la farà sonar!
