Die Nacht ist finster, schwül und bang, Der Wind im Walde tost; Ich wandre fort die Nacht entlang Und finde keinen Trost. Und mir zur Seite, engelmild, Und, ach! so schmerzlich traut, Zieht mein Geleite hin, das Bild Von meiner toten Braut. Ihr bleiches Antlitz bittet mich, Was mich ihr süßer Mund So zärtlich bat und feierlich In ihrer Sterbestund': "Bezwinge fromm die Todeslust, Die dir im Auge starrt, Wenn man mich bald von deiner Brust Fortreißet und verscharrt!" Da unten braust der wilde Bach, Führt reichen, frischen Tod, Die Wogen rufen laut mir nach: "Komm, komm und trinke Tod!" Das klingt so lieblich wie Musik, Wird wo ein Paar getraut: Doch zieht vom Sprunge mich zurück Das Wort der toten Braut. Stets finstrer wird der Wolkendrang, Der Sturm im Walde brüllt, Und ferne hebt sich Donnerklang, Der immer stärker schwillt. O schlängle dich, du Wetterstrahl, Herab, ein Faden mir, Der aus dem Labyrinth der Qual Hinaus mich führt zu dir!

Et à mon côté, douce comme un ange, Et, hélas, si douloureusement familière, Passe mon escorte, l'image De ma fiancée morte. Son visage pâle me demande Ce que sa douce bouche Si tendrement et si solennellement m'a demandé À l'heure de sa mort : « Triomphe pieusement de ce désir de mort, Qui regarde fixement dans tes yeux, Quand bientôt de ton sein je serai Arrachée et enterrée. » En bas le ruisseau sauvage rugit, Apporte une mort puissante et fraîche, Les vagues m'appellent fort : « Viens, viens et bois la mort ! » Cela sonne aussi agréablement que de la musique, Comme si un couple se mariait, Mais je suis empêché de sauter Par les mots de fiancée morte. De plus en plus sombre les nuages La tempête fait rage dans la forêt, Et un coup de tonnerre au loin s'élève, Enfle toujours plus fort. Oh, déroulez, rayons d'orage, Vers le bas une corde pour moi, Qui de ce labyrinthe de douleur M'amènerait dehors vers elle !
