Ein Lilienmädchen, fremd im Erdenleben,
Mit braunem Haar, geflochten dicht am Ohr,
Sehnsücht'gen Augen, halb im Tränenflor
Wie blaustes Wasser unterm Regenweben:
Die Wangen nie erglüht in heissem Beben,
Die Unterlippe eingezogen bang
In Furcht vor Liebe, und den Hals entlang
im Marmorweiss nur eine Ader eben.
Doch soll mein Mund auch ohne Rast ihr singen,
Selbst ihre Füsse küsst'ich nimmermehr,
Weil überschattet von der Ehrfurcht Schwingen
Wie Dante, als mit Beatricen er
Unter des [Greifen]¹ Brust, die Flammen schlug,
Im siebten Himmel sah den goldnen Zug.

Une fille-lys, étrangère à la vie terrestre,
Avec des cheveux bruns, en tresses sur les oreilles,
Des yeux ardents, à moitié voilés par les larmes,
Comme l'eau la plus bleue sous un voile de pluie :
Les joues ne brillent pas d'un chaud émoi,
La lèvre inférieure rentrée anxieusement
Dans la crainte de l'amour, et le long du cou
Blanc comme le marbre seulement un vaisseau lisse.
Mais ma bouche aussi sans repos la chantera,
Même si je n'embrasserai plus jamais ses pieds,
Parce que submergé par l'émotion du respect
Comme Dante quand avec Béatrice
Sous la poitrine du griffon, enveloppé par les flammes,
Au septième ciel il vit l'escalier d'or.
