Höstkväll

Solen går ned, och molnen vandra med vefullt sinne
hän öfver skummande sjö, öfver susande skogars skymning.
Måsen skriar på ödsligt skär
falken dväljes i klyftans skygd
trött att jaga han gömt sin näbb
vingens af skurar tyngda dun.

Solen gick ned, det mörknar allt mer öfver moens furor,
mörknar om bergen, där ränniln suckar i ljung ock mossa.
Tvinsjukt dröjer ett gulblekt sken
öfver västliga kullars rand,
dagens hviskande afsked tonar
sorgset i tätnande skuggor bort.

Regnets fall på hällarna sorlar af vemods sägner
födda af molnens jordkringsväfvande skumma tankar;
sjöns emot stranden brutna våg
brusar af dunkla ödens gång ;
röster, skälfvande hemskt af smärta,
ropa i stormen ur skogens djup.

Ensam ute i öde nejd, mot fuktig klippa 
lutad, står förtrollad en vandrare, lyss och njuter.
Känner hans själ en samklang med
sången, som höjes af stjärnlös natt?
Dör hans ve som en sakta ton i
höstens väldiga sorgedikt?

Soir d'automne

Le soleil se couche et les nuages vagabondent tristement
sur les eaux écumantes et sur le crépuscule bruissant des forêts.
La mouette crie sur les rochers désolés,
le faucon est à l'abri dans une crevasse,
fatigué de chasser, il cache son bec
sous les plumes de son aile couvertes de pluie.

Le soleil s'est couché, l'obscurité recouvre les pins de la lande
et la montagne où le ruisseau soupire dans la bruyère et la mousse.
Une lueur maladive, jaune pâle, s'attarde
à l'ouest sur le bord des collines,
l'écho de l'au-revoir chuchoté du jour 
s'éloigne tristement dans l'ombre épaissie.

Chute de la pluie sur les versants, murmure des légendes mélancoliques
nées des sombres pensées des nuages tissés autour de la terre ;
déferlement de la vague sur la plage,
mugissements d'un sombre coup du destin ;
voix, tremblant horriblement de douleur,
cris dans la tempête venus des profondeurs de la forêt

Seul dans un endroit inhabité, appuyé à un rocher humide,
un promeneur est charmé et il écoute avec plaisir.
Son âme peut-elle être en harmonie
avec le chant qui s'élève de la nuit sans étoiles ?
Son malheur meurt-il comme la douce mélodie
de la puissante élégie du soir ?
