Es war ein König im Norden
Gar stolz, gewaltig und reich;
Ihm gleich ist keiner geworden,
Und nie wird Einer ihm gleich.
Und als es galt zu sterben,
Er saß am öden Meer,
Es schlichen herbei seine Erben,
Der Wolf, die Eule, der Bär.
Da sprach er zum zottigen Bären:
Dir lass' ich Forst und Wald;
Kein Jagdherr wird dich stören
Im luftigen Aufenthalt.
Und weiter sprach er zur Eule:
Ich lasse sonder Zahl
Dir Burgen und Städte, vertheile
Sie deinen Töchtern zumal.
Und sprach zum Wolfe desgleichen:
Dir lass' ich ein stilles Feld,
Mit Leichen und aber Leichen,
So weit ich geherrscht, bestellt.
Und wie er solches gesprochen,
So streckt' er sich aus zur Ruh', -
Ein Sturm ist angebrochen,
Der deckte mit Schlossen ihn zu.

Il y avait un roi dans le Nord,
Très fier, puissant et riche
Personne ne l'égalait,
Et jamais quelqu'un ne l'égala.
Et quand il s'agit de mourir,
Il était assis au bord de la mer déserte,
Ses héritiers s'approchèrent,
Le loup, le hibou et l'ours.
Alors il dit à l'ours velu :
Je te laisse bois et forêt ;
Aucun chasseur ne te dérangera
Dans ce séjour en plein air.
Et il dit ensuite au hibou :
Je te laisse sans compter
Châteaux et villes, à partager
Surtout avec tes filles.
Et de même, il dit au loup :
Je te laisse un champ silencieux,
Couvert de cadavres et de cadavres,
Aussi vaste que mon royaume.
Et comme il eut ainsi parlé,
Il s'étendit dans la quiétude,
Une tempête éclata
Qui recouvrit son château et lui avec.
