Mürrisch braust der Eichenwald,
Aller Himmel ist umzogen,
Und dem Wandrer, rauh und kalt,
Kommt der Herbstwind nachgeflogen.

Wie der Wind zu Herbsteszeit
Mordend hinsaust in den Wäldern,
Weht mir die Vergangenheit
Von des Glückes Stoppelfeldern.

An den Bäumen, welk und matt,
Schwebt des Laubes letzte Neige,
Niedertaumelt Blatt auf Blatt
Und verhüllt die Waldessteige;

Immer dichter fällt es, will
Mir den Reisepfad verderben,
Daß ich lieber halte still,
Gleich am Orte hier zu sterben.

Qui souffle la mort dans les forêts,
Le passé souffle en moi,
Venu des champs moissonnés du bonheur.

Sur les arbres, flétris, épuisés,
Flottent les derniers restes du feuillage,
Les feuilles s'entassent en dessous
Et recouvrent les sentiers de la forêt.

Elles tombent de plus en plus dru,
Et vont tant pourrir le sentier de mon voyage,
Que je préfère m'arrêter en silence,
Tout de suite pour mourir ici.
