In solchen Nächten kannst du in den Gassen
Zukünftigen begegnen, schmalen blassen
Gesichtern, die dich nicht erkennen
und dich schweigend vorüberlassen.
Aber wenn sie zu reden begännen,
wärst du ein Langevergangener
wie du da stehst,
langeverwest.
Doch sie bleiben im Schweigen wie Tote,
obwohl sie die Kommenden sind.
Zukunft beginnt noch nicht.
Sie halten nur ihr Gesicht in die Zeit
und können, wie unter Wasser, nicht schauen;
und ertragen sie's doch eine Weile,
sehn sie wie unter den Wellen: die Eile
von Fischen und das Tauchen von Tauen.

rencontrer ceux du futur, de maigres et blêmes
figures qui ne te reconnaissent pas,
et te laissent passer sans un mot.
Mais s'ils avaient commencé à parler,
c'est que tu aurais disparu depuis longtemps,
tel que tu te trouves là,
depuis longtemps putréfié.
Mais ils restent muets comme des morts,
bien qu'ils soient ceux qui arrivent.
Le futur ne commence pas encore.
Ils tiennent seulement leur visage dans le temps,
et, comme sous l'eau, ne peuvent voir ;
et pourtant, s'ils le supportaient un moment,
