Facta est quasi vidua domina gentium, princeps provinciarum facta est sub tributo. 2 BETH - Plorans ploravit in nocte et lacrimae eius in maxillis eius. Non est qui consoletur eam ex omnibus caris eius. Omnes amici eius spreverunt eam et facti sunt ei inimici. 3 GIMEL - Migravit Iuda propter afflictionem et multitudinem servitutis, habitavit inter gentes nec invenit requiem. Omnes persecutores eius adprehenderunt eam inter angustias. 4 DALETH - Viae Sion lugent eo quod non sint qui veniant ad solemnitatem. Omnes portae eius destructae, sacerdotes eius gementes, virgines eius squalidae et ipsa oppressa amaritudine. 5 HE - Facti sunt hostes eius in capite, inimici illius locupletati sunt, quia Dominus locutus est super eam propter multitudinem iniquitatum eius. Parvuli eius ducti sunt in captivitatem ante faciem tribulantis. Jerusalem, convertere ad Dominum Deum tuum.

Aquí comienza la lamentación del profeta Jeremías: ¡Cómo está solitaria la ciudad antes populosa! Ha quedado como viuda la señora de las naciones, la reina de las provincias es ahora tributaria. Pasa la noche llorando y las lágrimas corren por sus mejillas. No hay nadie que la consuele entre todos los que amaba. Todos sus amigos la traicionaron y se han convertido en enemigos. Emigró Judá afligida, sujeta a servidumbre, y habitará entre extranjeros, sin encontrar reposo. Sus perseguidores la aprehendieron en medio de la angustia. Las calles de Sión están de luto, pues no hay quien venga a las solemnidades. Sus puertas están destruidas, sus sacerdotes gimen, las doncellas están pálidas y ella misma sumida en la amargura. Sus adversarios han prevalecido y sus enemigos se han enriquecido, pues el Señor la ha juzgado por sus muchas iniquidades. Sus pequeños han sido llevados cautivos ante los ojos del adversario. ¡Jerusalén, vuélvete al Señor tu Dios!
