Ist mir's doch, als sey mein Leben
An den schönen Strom gebunden.
Hab' ich Frohes nicht [am]¹ Ufer,
Und Betrübtes hier empfunden?

Ja du gleichest meiner Seele;
Manchmahl grün, und glatt gestaltet,
Und zu Zeiten - herrschen [Winde]² -
Schäumend, unruhvoll, gefaltet.

Fließest [fort zum]³ fernen Meere,
Darfst allda nicht heimisch werden.
Mich drängt's auch in mildre Lande -
Finde nicht das Glück auf Erden.

Em sembla com si la meva vida
estigués lligada a aquest bonic riu;
a la seva riba no he experimentat
la joia i també la tristesa?

Sí, t’assembles a la meva ànima;
de vegades en una faiçó verda i planera
i d’altres dominat per les turbulències,
bromerejant, inquiet i encrespat.

Tu desemboques en un mar llunyà
i aquí no pots sentir-te com a casa,
jo també sóc empès vers països més clements,
car no trobo la felicitat en aquesta terra.
