An den schönen Strom gebunden.
Hab' ich Frohes nicht [am]1 Ufer,
Und Betrübtes hier empfunden?
Ja du gleichest meiner Seele;
Manchmahl grün, und glatt gestaltet,
Und zu Zeiten - herrschen [Winde]2 -
Schäumend, unruhvoll, gefaltet.
Fließest [fort zum]3 fernen Meere,
Darfst allda nicht heimisch werden.
Mich drängt's auch in mildre Lande -
Finde nicht das Glück auf Erden.

Est liée à la jolie rivière ;
N'ai pas eu des joies sur sa rive,
Et ressenti des chagrins ,
Oui, tu ressembles à mon âme ;
Parfois verte et sans ride,
Et parfois dominée par des tempêtes,
Écumante, sans repos, fronçant les sourcils.
Tu coules vers la mer lointaine,
Tu ne peux pas être chez toi ici ;
Je suis aussi attirée vers des endroits plus cléments,
Car je ne trouve aucun bonheur sur terre.
