L'ombre éteignit mes yeux, un cri vint à ma bouche Et mon vieux cœur est mort dans un frisson farouche. Alors le chevalier Malheur s'est [rapproché]1, Il a mis pied à terre et sa main m'a touché. Son doigt ganté de fer entra dans ma blessure Tandis qu'il attestait sa loi d'une voix dure. Et voici qu'au contact glacé du doigt de fer Un cœur me renaissait, tout un cœur pur et fier Et voici que, fervent d'une candeur divine, Tout un cœur jeune et bon battit dans ma poitrine ! Guter und maskierter Ritter, der in Schweigen reitet - das Unglück hat mein altes Herz mit seiner Lanze durchbohrt. Das Blut meines alten Herzens schoss leuchtend rot hervor, und verflüchtigte sich dann in der Sonne auf den Blumen. Der Schatten löschte mein Augenlicht, ein Schrei kam mir auf die Lippen, und mein altes Herz erstirbt in einem wilden Schauer. Dann näherte sich des Unglücks Ritter. Er stieg vom Pferd und fasste mich an. Sein eiserner Finger drang in meine Wunde, indes er mit harter Stimme sein Gesetz bezeugte. Und siehe, bei der Berührung durch den eisigen Finger aus Eisen wurde mir ein Herz wiedergeboren, ein Herz vollkommen rein und stolz, und so geschah es, dass, erbrannt in göttlicher Tugendhaftigkeit, mir ein gänzlich junges, gutes Herz in der Brust schlug! Da stand ich nun, zitternd, trunken und ein wenig ungläubig, wie ein Mensch dem Gott im Traumgesicht erscheint. Doch der gute Ritter stieg wieder auf sein Pferd, und gab mir beim Davonreiten ein Zeichen er rief mir zu (noch immer hör ich diese Stimme): „ Sei zumindest vorsichtig und klug! Denn einmal genügt.
