Still vergeht am Saum des Waldes
Ein dunkles Wild
Am Hügel endet leise der Abendwind,
 
Bälde verstummt die Klage der Amsel
Und die Flöten des Herbstes
Schweigen im Rohr.
 
Mit silbernen Dornen
Schlägt uns der Frost,
Sterbende  wir  über Gräber geneigt
 
Oben löst sich blaues Gewölk;
Aus schwarzem Verfall Treten
Gottes strahlende Engel

À l'orée de la forêt disparaît en silence
Une bête brune.
Sur la colline le vent du soir tombe doucement.

Bientôt la plainte du merle se taira,
Comme les flûtes de l'automne
Se tairont dans les roseaux.

De ses épines d'argent 
Le gel nous frappe,
Nous, agonisant, penchés au-dessus des tombes.

Là-haut les nuées bleues se dissolvent ;
Sortant  d'une noire déliquescence
Avancent les anges rayonnant de Dieu.
