Wo die Taub' in stillen Buchen
Ihren Tauber sich erwählt,
Wo sich Nachtigallen suchen,
Und die Rebe sich vermählt;
Wo die Bäche sich vereinen,
Gieng ich oft mit leichtem Scherz,
Gieng ich oft mit bangem Weinen;
Suchte mir ein liebend Herz.

O, da gab die finstre Laube
Leisen Trost im Abendschein;
O, da kam ein süßer Glaube
Mit dem Morgenglanz im Hain;
Da vernahm ichs in den Winden;
Ihr Geflüster lehrte mich:
Daß ich suchen sollt', und finden,
Finden, holde Liebe! dich.

Aber ach! wo blieb auf Erden,
Holde Liebe, deine Spur?
Lieben, um geliebt zu werden,
Ist das Loos der Engel nur.
Statt der Wonne, fand ich Schmerzen,
Hieng an dem was mich verließ;
Frieden giebt den treuen Herzen
Nur ein künftig Paradieß.

Allà on, a la tranquil•la fageda,
els coloms escullen llurs colomes,
on els rossinyols es cerquen,
i els ceps fan maridatge,
on els rierols es barregen,
hi anava jo amb certa plagasitat,
hi anava amb plors angoixants,
cercant un cor que m’estimés.

Oh, allà l’ombrívol fullatge donava
un dolç conhort en la llum del capvespre;
oh, allà vingué una dolça creença
al boscatge, amb la llum del matí;
ho vaig percebre en el vent,
el seu xiuxiueig m’indicà:
que jo havia de cercar i trobar,
trobar-te a tu, amor encisador! A tu.

Però ai! On, a la terra, ha restat,
amor encisador, el teu rastre?
Estimar per ser estimat
és solament la sort dels àngels.
En lloc de la benaurança vaig trobar el sofriment,
vaig aferrar-me al que m’havia deixat;
la pau s’atorga als cors fidels
només en un paradís futur.
