Ein Schäfer saß im Grünen, Sein Liebchen süß im Arm; Durch [Buchenwipfel]1 schienen Der Sonne Strahlen warm. [Er kos'te]2 froh und heiter Von Liebeständeley. Da ritt bewehrt ein Reiter [Den]3 Glücklichen vorbey. »Sitz' ab, und suche Kühle!« Rief ihm der Schäfer zu. »Des Mittags nahe Schwüle Gebiethet stille Ruh'. Noch lacht im Morgenglanze So Strauch als Blume hier, Und Liebchen pflückt zum Kranze Die [frischen]4 Blüthen dir.« Da sprach der finstre Reiter: »Nie [hielt]5 mich Wald und Flur. Mich treibt mein Schicksal weiter, Und ach, mein ernster Schwur! Ich gab mein [frisches]6 Leben Dahin um schnöden Sold; Glück kann ich nicht erstreben, Nur höchstens Ruhm und Gold. Un pastor seia damunt l’herba verda, la seva dolça estimada als braços; a través les capçades dels faigs lluïen càlids els raigs del sol. Ell, content i joiós, gaudia del flirteig amorós. Aleshores, un cavaller armat passà cavalcant per davant la feliç parella. “Desmunta i cerca la fresca!” Li cridà el pastor. “S’acosta la xafogor del migdia i s’imposa un repòs tranquil. A l’esclat del matí encara somriuen aquí els matolls i les flors, i la meva estimada en collirà per fer-te una garlanda.” Llavors el sorrut cavaller digué: “Els boscos i els camps mai m’han deturat. El meu destí m’empeny sempre més lluny, i, ai, també el meu solemne jurament! He sacrificat la meva vida per una vulgar soldada; no puc aspirar a trobar la felicitat, tot al més, la fama i l’or. Així doncs, corser meu, trota de pressa, enllà d’on creixen les flors. Algun dia, a la tomba, la pau recompensarà els afanys del guerrer.”
