Ein Schäfer saß im Grünen, Sein Liebchen süß im Arm; Durch [Buchenwipfel]1 schienen Der Sonne Strahlen warm. [Er kos'te]2 froh und heiter Von Liebeständeley. Da ritt bewehrt ein Reiter [Den]3 Glücklichen vorbey. »Sitz' ab, und suche Kühle!« Rief ihm der Schäfer zu. »Des Mittags nahe Schwüle Gebiethet stille Ruh'. Noch lacht im Morgenglanze So Strauch als Blume hier, Und Liebchen pflückt zum Kranze Die [frischen]4 Blüthen dir.« Da sprach der finstre Reiter: »Nie [hielt]5 mich Wald und Flur. Mich treibt mein Schicksal weiter, Und ach, mein ernster Schwur! Ich gab mein [frisches]6 Leben Dahin um schnöden Sold; Glück kann ich nicht erstreben, Nur höchstens Ruhm und Gold. Un berger était assis au milieu de la verdure, Sa douce amie dans les bras ; À travers le sommet des hêtres brillaient Les rayons du soleil. Joyeux et enjoués ils goûtaient Aux joies de l'amour. Alors un cavalier arriva en armes Près du couple heureux. « Assieds-toi et viens vers notre fraîcheur, » Lui dit le berger. « La chaleur étouffante de midi approche Et demande de se reposer tranquillement. « Encore dans l'éclat du matin sourient Les buissons comme les fleurs, Et ma bien-aimée va cueillir pour faire une guirlande Les plus belles fleurs pour toi. » Alors le sinistre cavalier dit : « Les bois et les prairies ne me gardent jamais : Mon sort me conduit au loin, Et, hélas, mon vœu solennel. « J'ai donné ma jeune vie Contre de l'argent méprisable. Je ne peux pas m'efforcer d'atteindre le bonheur, Au mieux la gloire et l'or. « Donc, vite, ma monture, et trotte Parmi le fleurs qui fleurissent. Un jour, dans le tombe la paix récompensera La peine de celui qui bataille. »
