Tutto lo giorno piango
Language: Italian (Italiano)
Tutto lo giorno piango, hoime meschino,
E poi la note, quando sto a dormire,
M’appar’ in songno chi mi fa’ morire,
Altier’ e bell’ e con volto divino,
Con dard’ in man’, e con arc’ e saetta,
Come guerriera che vuol far vendetta:
Et io, tremendo, m’inchino avant’ ella
Con occhi bassi, et le dico piangendo:
“Non m’amazzar crudel, ch’io sto dormendo.”
E essa all’ hor piu bell’ e piu crudella
Diventa e par che cossi dica forte:
“O veglio dorm’io ti daro la morte.”

All day long I weep, poor me
Language: English  after the Italian (Italiano)
All day long I weep, poor me,
And then at night, when I am sleeping,
She who makes me die appears in my dreams,
Haughty and beautiful, with a godlike face,,
A dart in her hand, and a bow and arrow
Like a warrior who seeks vengeance:
And I, trembling, bow before her,
My eyes lowered, and weeping I say:
“Do not strike me down, cruel one, as I am sleeping.”
And she then becomes more beautiful and more cruel
And seems to speak thus, loudly:
“Whether you wake or sleep, I shall give you death.”
