Da schlummert der Müde, da ruht er aus.
Und schlief er im Schimmer des Abends ein,
Es wecket ihn nimmer der Frühe Schein!

[Wen aber]2 gemieden ersehnte Ruh',
Hier schließt er zum Frieden sein Auge zu:
[Wer nächtliche]3 Stunden [im Gram]4 durchwacht,
[Tief]5 schläft er da unten in [stiller]6 Nacht.

Da borgt nicht die Hülle des [Traumes]7 der Schmerz,
Auf ewig nun stille steht [hier]8 das Herz.
Mag's toben da oben und stürmen sehr,
Was kümmert das Toben den Schläfer mehr!

La pau regna allà baix a la casa fosca,
allà dormita l’home fatigat, és allà que reposa.
I adormit al besllum del capvespre,
la llum del matí no el desperta mai!

El desitjat repòs que ell havia defugit,
és aquí i li tanca els ulls a la pau:
qui vetlla en les hores doloroses del destret,
dorm tranquil allà baix en la profunda nit.

Allà, el dolor no manlleva l’embolcall del somni,
el cor resta tranquil per sempre.
Encara que allà dalt bramuli i tempestegi,
ja no preocupa pas més al dorment!
