Ins Wasser gleiten ließ . . .
Nicht deshalb liebe ich den Ostwind, weil
Er mir den holden Duft der Birnbaumblüten
Herüberträgt von blumig weißen Höhen, -
Nein, weil er mir das Blatt der Frühlingsweide
An meinen Kahn trieb, - darum lieb ich ihn!
Nicht deshalb lieb ich dieses kleine Blatt
Der Frühlingsweide, weil es mir die Wonnen
Des Lenzes bringt, - nein, weil die junge Frau
Mit einer feinen Nadel meinen Namen
Hineingeritzt hat, - darum lieb ich es!

Because slipped this tiny villow leaf
Into the waters . . .
I do not love the east wind
Because he brings the fragrance of pear blossoms
From flowering white heights, -
No, because his blowing made the willow leaf
Float towards my boat, - therefore I love him!
I do not love this tiny little willow leaf
Because it brings the delights of spring, -
No, because the young woman scratched
With a very fine needle my name
Into it, - therefore I love it!
