Junge Rosen banden?

Lerchen in der blauen Luft
Sangen ungesehen,
Ferne lag der Morgenduft
Über allen Höhen.

Standen still uns zugewandt,
Mochten träumend scheinen --
Wohl, ich fühlte deine Hand
Manchmal in der meinen.

Plötzlich schlugst du auf den Blick,
Alles war gestanden --
Sag', wohin ist Ruh' und Glück,
Seit wir dort uns fanden?

When we encountered each other in the early morning,
And, all alone at the green hedge,
Twined young roses?

Larks in the blue air
Sang unseen,
The morning scent lay far away
Above all the heights.

We stood silently turned toward one another,
Might have seemed to be dreaming --
Truly I sometimes felt 
Your hand in mine.

Suddenly you opened your eyes,
Everything was confessed --
Tell me, where has peace and happiness gone
Since we found each other there?
