Le cormoran

Solitaire et immobile, le cormoran d'automne 
médite au bord du fleuve, et son œil rond, 
suit la marche de l'eau.
Si quelquefois un homme se promène sur le rivage, 
le cormoran s'éloigne, lentement, 
en balançant la tête ;
Mais, derrière les feuilles, 
il guette le départ du promeneur, 
car il aspire à voir encore 
les ondulations du courant monotone ;
Et, la nuit, lorsque la lune brille sur les vagues, 
le cormoran médite, un pied dans l'eau.
Ainsi l'homme, qui a dans le cœur un grand amour, 
suit, toujours, les ondulations 
d'une même pensée.

Alleen en onbeweeglijk, mediteert de herfstaalscholver 
aan de oever van de rivier, en zijn ronde oog,
volgt de loop van het water.
Als er soms een mens wandelt langs de dijk,
neemt de aalscholver afstand, langzaam,
balancerend het hoofd;
Maar, achter het gebladerte,
wacht hij op het vertrek van de wandelaar
want hij verlangt nog te zien
de overstromingen van de monotone stroom;
En, ‘s nacht, omdat de maan schijnt over de golven,
mediteert de aalscholver, één voet in het water.
Terwijl de mens, die in het hart een grote liefde heeft,
altijd volgt, de golfbewegingen
van eenzelfde gedachte
