by Hans Christian Andersen (1805 - 1875)

Tyveknægten
Language: Danish (Dansk)
Our translations:  FRE
I vuggen ligger det spæde nor,
det sover så trygt og stille;
moderen læser et fadervor,
en engel hun ser i den lille.

Ømt hun kysser hans runde kind
og glemmer hver jordisk smerte,
drømmer så sødt i fremtid ind;
så drømmer hvert moderhjerte.

Men ravnen kommer med al sin slægt,
og synger bag ruden sin vise:
"Din engel bliver en tyveknægt,
og vi skal engelen spise!"

Confirmed with Hans Christian Andersen, Samlede digte, edited by John de Mylius, Aschehoug: [no city given, but NYPL assumes Copenhagen], 2000, page 55
