Ist noch alles todt und kahl!

Löse doch die harte Rinde,

Wärm' die Seele, die mit Sehnsucht

Lasse Maienglöcklein spriessen,
Himmelsblumen [licht]¹ und klar:

Mother!  Ah, within my heart
There trembles yet no ray of spring,
Nothing sprouts, nothing blooms,
Everything is still dead and bare!

Break the hard rind
That rigidly encloses my innermost being,
Warm my soul, which with yearning
Waits for its springtime.

Let lilies of the valley burgeon,
Flowers of Heaven bright and clear:
Give me chastity, humility, mildness,
Make me pious and pure and true!
