Das Tagewerk ist abgethan. 
Gib, Vater, deinen Segen! 
Nun dürfen wir der Ruhe nahn;
Wir thaten nach Vermögen.
Die holde Nacht umhüllt die Welt,
Und Stille herrscht in Dorf und Feld.

Ohn' Ende kreis't der Rundelauf 
Der eitlen Lebenssorgen: 
Den Müden nimmt der Abend auf;
Ihn weckt der andre Morgen.
Man trachtet, hofft, genießt, wird satt;
Groß sieht, wer wünscht, und klein, wer hat.

Aus Lieb' hat uns der Vater Schweiß 
Und Arbeit aufgeleget.
Des Leibes Wohl gedeiht durch Fleiß;
Der Geist auch wird erreget.
Und strebt aus eitler Sorgen Tand
Empor zu Gott, der ihn gesandt.

[Wann]1 du getreu vollendet hast,
Wozu dich Gott bestellte;
Behaglich fühlst du dann die Rast,
Vom Thun in Hitz und Kälte.
Am Himmel [blinkt]2 der Abendstern,
Und zeigt noch beßre Rast von fern.

Auf Halm und Blume läßt geheim 
Der Vater Labsal thauen;
Mit lassem Kniee wandert heim 
Der Mensch aus kühlen Auen:
Ihn bettet Gott zu süßer Ruh',
Und zieht des Dunkels Vorhang zu.

Er aber sorgt indeß und wacht
Für uns mit Vatergnade,
Daß nicht ein Unfall wo bei Nacht
An Leib' und Gut uns schade.
Wir ruhn, uns selber unbewußt.
Und wachen auf, voll Kraft und Lust.
