Zitternd an der Krücke Wer mit düsterm, rückgesunknem Blicke, Ausgegossen in ein heulend Ach, Schwer geneckt vom eisernen Geschicke, Schwankt dem stummgetragnen Sarge nach? Chiarore sepolcrale spande la luna sul silenzio mortale dei prati, sospira lo spirito notturno per l'aria. Nuvole nebbiose rabbrividiscono, le stelle splendono tristi e pallide, come lumini sulle tombe. Come di fantasmi, muti e cupi e scarni ecco, in nero funebre sfarzo, là un movimento presso i giacigli dei morti, nel brivido della notte funerea. Tremando sulla stampella, chi con tetro e sprofondato sguardo, si effonde in un urlo ululante, e perseguitato dal gelido destino, ondeggia verso la silente bara? E' uscito: "Padre" dalle labbra del fanciullo? Umidi brividi scuotono tremendi il suo scheletro languido e afflitto, le sue chiome d'argento si agitano. Squarciata la sua ferita di fuoco, strazio d'inferno gli attraversa l'anima! "Padre" è uscito dalla bocca del fanciullo, "Figlio", ha mormorato il cuore del padre.
