Du hast es nicht gewusst
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Du bist bei Tag mein Sonnenlicht,
du bist mein Traum bei Nacht,
und wie die Blum' ans Morgenlicht
hab' ich an dich gedacht;
mein Herz war starr, mein Herz war tot,
es schlief in meiner Brust,
da wurdest du sein Morgenrot,
du hast es nicht gewusst.
Und wie die Sonne liebt den Tag,
und wie den Mond die Nacht,
und wie das Herz an seinen Schlag
hab' ich an dich gedacht;
mein Morgentraum war schwer und bang',
doch mein Erwachen Lust,
ich jauchzt' bei deiner Stimme Klang,
du hast es nicht gewusst.
Du ziehst vorüber groß und licht,
von Sonnenglanz umglüht,
und siehst die Blum' am Wege nicht,
die still für dich erblüht;
ach, ist denn alles nur ein Wahn,
nur Traum von Himmelslust?
Verzeih' dir Gott, was du getan,
du hast es nicht gewusst!

You were not aware of it
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
By day you are my sunlight,
By night you are my dream,
And as the flower thinks of the morning light,
I thought of you;
My heart was frozen, my heart was dead,
It slept within my breast,
Then you became its rosy dawn,
You were not aware of it.
And as the sun loves the day,
And as the night [loves] the moon,
And as the heart thinks of its beating,
I thought of you;
My morning dream was heavy and anxious,
But my awakening was joy,
I rejoiced at the sound of your voice,
You were not aware of it.
You pass before me, large and bright,
Surrounded by the radiance of the sun,
And you do not see the flower along the road
That quietly bloomed for you;
Ah, is everything then only an illusion,
Only a dream of heavenly bliss?
May God forgive you for what you did,
You were not aware of it!
