by Hafis (c1327 - 1390)
Translation by Georg Friedrich Daumer (1800 - 1875)

Durstig sind wir, lieber Wirt
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the Persian (Farsi)
Durstig sind wir, lieber Wirt,
  Doch im Bankerutte;
Nimm, o nimm für baares Geld
  Unsre blaue Kutte!

Buße, Contemplation,
  Kanzel und Katheder,
Lieber Gott, was sind sie wert?
  Keine Hagebutte.

Aber hoch gepriesen sei
  Rebe mir und Winzer,
Kelterfaß und Kelterer
  Und die volle Butte!

Das reale Resultat
  Dieser edlen Mühen,
Es gedeih' uns früh und spat,
  Wie dem Kind die Dutte!

"Das Gebäude deines Seins
  Stürzet es!" Es sei so!
Einen schönen Schatz vielleicht
  Find' ich in dem Schutte.
