Onmerkbaar, als op rozestruiken, 
de tere knopjes opengaan
of 's avonds zich de kelkjes luiken
die tussen 't hoge meigras staan;

Onmerkbaar, als, heel hoog daarboven,
de sterren gaan hun stille gang,
of als het fruit in zonnige hoven
en blosjes op een kinderwang,

Zo kwam dees liefde, als, na het duister 
van langen winter, helder en klaar
de zon heel d'aarde baadt in haar luister.
Wij wisten't niet en zij was daar!

At dusk their petals sink their bosom
Ans silent soaring grasses sway;

As secret as the stars are reigning
In blue eternal firmament,
As children's eyes with blushes playing
And fruits that ripen to the bent:

So came our passion, like the sunshine
At Winter's ending, yearningdrunken
All earth it bathes and floods into transport.
We knew it not but Love was there!
