Er sah mich an so fragend
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG
Er sah mich an so fragend,
So treu, so stumm, so still,
Er sah mich an -- ich weiß nicht,
Was er nur von mir will.

Ich werd's ihm jetzt verbieten.
Die Welt ist groß und schön,
Und drin ist außer mir noch
Viel andres anzusehn.

Und doch -- 's möcht ihn betrüben,
Das ginge ja nicht an;
Ich glaub', ich muß ihn lieben,
Den schlanken, fremden Mann.

He gazed at me so questioningly
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
He gazed at me so questioningly,
So faithfully, so mutely, so silently,
He gazed at me -- I do not know
What he wants of me.

I shall now forbid him to do so,
The world is great and beautiful,
And aside from me, there are within it
Many other things to be looked at.

And yet -- it might sadden him;
That would not do;
I believe that I must love him,
The slender, foreign man.
