-- Einhundert Goldzechinen In seidnem Beutelein. -- Sei still, laß ihn [nichts]1 merken! Ich freie dich hernach. Und hast du mich gefreiet, Was giebst du mir alsdann?

There were three maidens And all three of them in love. The loveliest of the three, Ninetta, boarded a boat. As she plied the oars, Her ring fell into the sea. -- Oh, fisherman upon the waves, Come quickly over here to fish! -- If I fish up your ring, What shall I be paid for the catch? -- One hundred Venetian gold ducats In a silk pouch. -- Only keep your ducats And the pouch at present. I want only one kiss of love From your lips. -- If my father should hear of it, Ah, what would he say? -- Be quiet, don't let him [notice anything]1! I'll marry you thereafter. And when you have married me, What shall you give me then? -- Up to a high mountain I shall quickly carry you. Out of three and thirty bricks [I shall build you]2 a house there, And three and thirty painters Shall paint it for [you]3. Of three and thirty colours I shall give you a garment, And three and thirty tailors Shall sew it for you by hand.1
