Da huscht das Reh, das schlanke;

The singer’s grave
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
And when I have died, then dig me a grave
In the forest under the linden tree,
There the birds will sing above me,
And above me the winds will whirl along.
There clouds scud and lightning bolts spark,
There the deer, the slender one, darts;
There the eagle rises toward Heaven
Like a proud victorious thought.
Yes, that is a true grave for a poet,
There blissful dreams can be dreamed,
It is so sweet to rest in the womb of the earth
To the soughing of the wellsprings and trees.
Therefore, when I have died, then dig me a grave
In the forest under the linden tree,
There the birds shall sing above me,
And above me the winds shall whirl along.
