Wie deutlich des Mondes Licht
Zu mir spricht,
Mich beseelend zu der Reise:
"Folge treu dem alten Gleise,
Wähle keine Heimath nicht.
Ew'ge Plage
Bringen sonst die schweren Tage.
Fort zu andern
Sollst du wechseln, sollst du wandern,
Leicht entfliehend jeder Klage."

Sanfte Ebb' und hohe Fluth,
Tief im Muth,
Wandr' ich so im [Dunkel]¹ weiter,
Steige muthig, singe heiter,
Und die Welt erscheint mir gut.
Alles reine
Seh' ich mild im Wiederscheine,
Nichts verworren
In des Tages Gluth verdorren:
Froh umgeben, doch alleine.

"Suis fidèlement l'ancien sentier,
Ne choisis aucune patrie.
Des tourments sans fin
Sinon sont apportés par les jours difficiles ;
Au loin, ailleurs
Tu devrais changer, tu devrais voyager,
T'échappant légèrement de toute plainte.

Marée paisible et hautes eaux,
Au fond de mon cœur,
Je voyage au loin dans l'obscurité,
Je grimpe bravement, je chante gaiement,
Et le monde me semble bon.
Tout est pur
De ce que je vois dans un doux reflet,
Rien n'est trouble
Dans l'ardeur brûlante du jour :
Entouré de joie, mais seul.
