Lässt umsonst dein Mädchen bangen,
Raubst ihr das geträumte Glück.
Ach, es wich mir Ruh' und Frieden,
Seit von mir du bist geschieden!

Dumpf in ungemess'nem Raume,
Wog' an Wog' empor sich hebt,
Bis zum fernsten Himmelssaume
Auf sie zu den Wolken strebt.
Und ich höre sie mit Grausen
Wild an ferne Felsen brausen.

Doch vergebens hoff' ich Kunde,
Wo, Geliebter, jetzt du weilst,
Wann mir endlich naht die Stunde,
Wo du mir entgegen eilst.
Dunkler Gott, o hab' Erbarmen,
Gib mir Ruh' in seinen Armen!

Assourdies dans l'espace sans limites
Les vagues l'une après l'autre montent
Jusqu'au bord le plus éloigné du ciel,
Se dressant vers les nuages.
Et je les entends avec horreur
Gronder sauvagement contre les rochers au loin.

Mais j'espère en vain des nouvelles,
