Erwartung
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  CAT ENG FRE
Bist auf ewig du gegangen,
Teurer, kehrst du nie zurück?
Lässt umsonst dein Mädchen bangen,
Raubst ihr das geträumte Glück.
Ach, es wich mir Ruh' und Frieden,
Seit von mir du bist geschieden!

Dumpf in ungemess'nem Raume,
Wog' an Wog' empor sich hebt,
Bis zum fernsten Himmelssaume
Auf sie zu den Wolken strebt.
Und ich höre sie mit Grausen
Wild an ferne Felsen brausen.

Doch vergebens hoff' ich Kunde,
Wo, Geliebter, jetzt du weilst,
Wann mir endlich naht die Stunde,
Wo du mir entgegen eilst.
Dunkler Gott, o hab' Erbarmen,
Gib mir Ruh' in seinen Armen!

Expectation
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Have you gone forever,
Precious one, shall you never return?
You leave your maiden to tremble in vain,
Wrest from her the dreamed-of happiness.
Ah, rest and peace have gone from me
Since you departed!

Dully into limitless space
Wave upon wave lifts itself upwards,
Striving to the farthest edges of heaven
Up to the clouds.
And with horror I hear them
Roaring upon distant cliffs.

But in vain I hope for news of where,
Beloved, you now sojourn,
When the hour shall finally draw near
That you come hurrying toward me.
Dark god, have mercy,
Grant me rest in his arms!
