Ich bin im Mai gegangen
Und hab' es nicht gewußt,
Also von Schmerz befangen
Ist die erkrankte Brust.

Ein Vogel hat gesungen
Im jungbelaubten Wald,
Da ist ins Herz gedrungen
Mir seine Stimme bald.

Vom Aug' ist mir gefallen
Ein schwerer [Tränentau]¹,
Drauf sah den Mai ich wallen
Durch Erd' und Himmel blau.

Als Vogel ausgesungen
Flog er ins weite Land,
Und wie sein Lied verklungen,
Um mich der Mai verschwand.

Je m'en suis allé en Mai
Et je ne m'en suis pas rendu compte,
Si plongé dans le chagrin
Était mon cœur malade.

Un oiseau chantait
Dans la forêt au nouveau feuillage,
Là dans mon cœur pénétrait
Vite sa voix.

De mes yeux tombaient
De lourdes larmes de rosée,
Et je voyais Mai flotter
À travers la terre et le ciel bleu.

Quand l'oiseau arrêta son chant
Il s'envola vers une terre lointaine,
Et quand son chant s'évanouit
Mai disparut tout autour de moi.
