Ringsum ist Felseneinsamkeit.
Des Todes bleiche Blumen schauern
auf Gräbern, die im Dunkel trauern -
doch diese Trauer hat kein Leid.

Der Himmel lächelt still herab
in diesen traumverschlossnen Garten,
wo stille Pilger seiner warten,
es wacht das Kreuz auf jedem Grab.

Die Kirche ragt wie ein Gebet
vor einem Bilde ewiger Gnaden,
manch Licht brennt unter den Arkaden,
das stumm für arme Seelen fleht --

Indes die Bäume blüh'n zur Nacht,
daß sich des Todes Antlitz hülle
in ihrer Schönheit schimmernde Fülle,
die Tote tiefer träumen macht.

Il y a tout autour la solitude du rocher.
Les fleurs blêmes de la mort frémissent
Sur les tombes qui s'affligent dans le noir --
Mais il n'y a pas de souffrance dans ce deuil.

Là-haut le ciel sourit en silence
Dans ce jardin fermé au rêve,
Où des pèlerins silencieux espèrent en lui,
La croix veille sur chaque tombe.

L'église s'élève comme une prière
Devant l'image d'éternelles grâces,
Bien des lumières brûlent sous l'arcade
Et, muettes implorent pour les pauvres âmes.

Cependant les arbres fleurissent à la nuit
Pour que le visage de la mort se couvre
De la plénitude frémissante de leur beauté
Qui fait rêver les morts plus profondément.
