Wie kommt's, daß mit dem Pfeil im Herzen Im Schmerz ich sang der Liebe Lust? Wie kommt's, daß nur von heitern Scherzen Mir quillt die todeswunde Brust? -- Es segelt sanft auf Silberwogen Im Schneegewand der stolze Schwan, Gesanglos ist er lang gezogen In stummer Lust die stille Bahn. Im Morgenroth, im Mondenscheine Die Fluth durchschifft' er frei -- und schwieg; Am Ufer blühten Rosenhaine, Er segelte vorbei -- und schwieg. Jetzt, da der Pfeil sein Herz durchdrungen, Da ihm der Tod im Busen glüht, Was er in Wonne nie gesungen, Er singt's in Schmerz: sein erstes Lied.
