Der Mond

Als Gott den lieben Mond erschuf,
gab er ihm folgenden Beruf:

Beim Zu- sowohl wie beim Abnehmen
sich deutschen Lesern zu bequemen,

ein A formierend und ein Z -
dass keiner groß zu denken hätt'.

Befolgend dies ward der Trabant
ein völlig deutscher Gegenstand.

Note: in stanza 3, line 1, the letters A and Z appear in printed editions as the old Sütterlin letters. Some online editions erroneously use Greek letters. See Wikipedia's entry on Sütterlin.

La lune

Quand Dieu créa la lune,
il lui donna cette vocation :

En croissant, aussi bien qu'en décroissant,
que les lecteurs allemands consentent,

qu'en formant un α et un ζ
personne n'aurait trop à réfléchir.

En observant cela, le satellite devint
un objet totalement allemand.

Note for stanza 3, line 1: 'α' fait référence à 'décroitre' (en allemand abnehmen) et 'ζ' à 'croitre' (en allemand zunehmen)
