Ins Museum bin zu später  
Stunde heut ich noch gegangen,  
Wo die Heil'gen, wo die Beter  
Auf den goldnen Gründen prangen.  
                              
Dann durchs Feld bin ich geschritten  
Heißer Abendglut entgegen,  
Sah, die heut das Korn geschnitten,  
Garben auf die Wagen legen.  
                              
Um die Lasten in den Armen,  
Um den Schnitter und die Garbe  
Floß der Abendglut, der warmen,  
Wunderbare Goldesfarbe.  
                              
Auch des Tages letzte Bürde,  
Auch der Fleiß der Feierstunde,  
War umflammt von heil'ger Würde,  
Stand auf schimmernd goldnem Grunde.

Sur fond doré

Aujourd'hui encore je suis allé
Au musée à une heure tardive,
Où les saints, où les orants
Resplendissent sur les fonds dorés.

Puis je suis allé à travers champs
À la rencontre de la brûlante ardeur du soir,
J'ai vu ceux qui aujourd'hui fauchent le blé
Et posent les gerbes sur les charrettes.

Autour des charges dans leurs bras,
Autour des faucheurs et des gerbes
Le chaud brasier du soir étale,
Ses merveilleuses couleurs d'or

Le dernier chargement du soir,
Comme la dévotion de la cérémonie
Étaient enflammés d'une sainte dignité,
Sur un fond d'or resplendissant.
